Exxon confirms Kurdistan deals

Mindful of Baghdad's anger, the company has publicly acknowledged its controversial Kurdistan play for the first time.

NEW YORK - ExxonMobil has publicly acknowledged its activities in Kurdistan for the first time, though it stopped short of confirming that any contracts have been finalized, testing the U.S. legal reporting requirements meant to protect shareholders.

Ever since Oct. 18, 2011, when the company signed six production sharing contracts with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Exxon has declined to discuss or even confirm the existence of the deals. That silence was broken late Friday afternoon, in a short sentence within Exxon's annual Form 10-K filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
