It would be nice if they can plug iraq into a decent backbone... but chained to the gulf's backbone hasn't provided sufficient bandwidth for Iraq's current domestic requirements let alone any future growth and wireless data services.

Unfortunately Iraq's geographical location means that possibly the cheapest and most efficient and speedy way of increasing bandwidth would be for the ITPC to acquire 2-3 communications satellites and have three earth stations in Baghdad, mosul and basra hooked into the fibre optic backbone. such a scheme would give iraq a multi GB backbone instantaneously...

an even better solution is to piggy back a fibre optic backbone to Iraq's oil pipeline to the turkish port of Ceyhan which shouldn't cost too much, and from there link directly to europe. This of coursewould give iraq multi Terabyte connectivity to the outside world and there'd be free broadband for everyone via WiMaX. One can dream!
