Sorry, but in order to take an article seriously , where did this think crop in?

"Today it is even possible to get home internet access, a step that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. "

Now, home based internet has been available in Iraq since 1999 via PSTN and ISDN lines, and since 2003 via VSAT and Wireless LAN solutions... That's over 10 years since domestic home-internet has been available in Iraq (and although it was censored in saddam's time, and is uncensored now, we do still consider countries like ira, china and Dubai to "have" internet...).

I do hope that the factual accuracy of future posts on topics are reviewed before being posted, so as not to mislead the reading public who may not be acquainted with Iraq.

With regards to the poor speed of internet connections in Baghdad, due to the use of VSAT terminals there's only a small set of transponders "aimed" at the baghdad region, but a huge number of subscribers within that region. If you were to drive 100km out of Baghdad and using the same VSAT equipment you would get a much better service since you will be on a different "transponder" of the satellite and will share it with only a couple of farmers...

I hope the underlying reason for the slow speed of VSAT / earth station based internet could have been clarified better in your post.
