Chaos looms over elections

Protests on the streets of Baghdad as election campaigning delayed and courts rush through appeals of banned candidates

BAGHDAD - Chaos is threatening to engulf the Iraqi elections, amid protests from politicians of all stripes, street demonstrations, cancelled parliamentary debates and courtroom appeals.

Demonstrations against what Shia groups call a Baathist resurgence were held yesterday in Baghdad and Basra, as debate raged over whether candidates accused of links Saddam Hussein's regime would stand in the March 7 poll.
