IOCs feel heat of Basra protests

Amidst the fervor of a national protest movement, unemployed locals are blocking access to work sites and oil workers are calling for increased scrutiny on IOCs.

BASRA - International companies in Basra are feeling pressure from intensifying demonstrations near several project facilities, prompting Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to visit Iraq's oil capital to offer reassurances.

In the past week, protesters at two of Iraq's largest oil fields, Rumaila and West Qurna 2, have blocked roads leading to work sites. During another demonstration on Saturday, near an office of the Korean company Daewoo at the al-Fao port, a protester died after he was shot by a security guard.
