Majnoon to hit production target, not landmines

Shell launches jetty as a marker of progress, though the super-giant oil field faces challenges, including the unexploded remnants of war.

MAJNOON OIL FIELD - The road to the Majnoon oil field is paved through the past. Communities of farmers used to thrive here, but their marshlands were drained by a dictator and became a new desert; now the villages are impoverished, despite Basra province's increasing oil production.

As Royal Dutch Shell leads a project to boost Majnoon's production, that history is being replaced with the infrastructure the country needs for a fighting chance to rebuild itself.
