BAGHDAD - Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has asked Parliament to begin the proceedings to remove Electricity Minister Ra’ad Shalal al-Ani from office, following revelations of a two power deals with unqualified or non-existent companies.

The move counters the recent media narrative that Ani had in fact been fired and that Maliki had the power to do it himself. It also potentially pits Maliki against his rival Ayad Allawi, the ex-prime minister who heads the Iraqiya political block, of which Ani is a member.
