Haider al-Abadi nominated as Iraqi PM

Deadline defections from PM Maliki give deputy Parliament speaker the Shia coalition nod.

Deputy Parliament Speaker Haider al-Abadi will be nominated as the pan-Shia National Alliance bloc's candidate for prime minister, a senior official in Abadi's office said.

The decision comes after members of Iraq's Shia parties, including some close to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, such as Abadi himself, broke both their allegiance and the political logjam just hours before a Constitutionally mandated deadline.
