Maliki’s Erbil visit opens door to oil talks

Meeting in Erbil for the first time in almost three years, PM Maliki and KRG President Barzani stress a new atmosphere of cooperation that could renew long-stymied oil policy dialogue.

ERBIL - Iraq's Prime Minister held high level talks with Kurdish leaders on Sunday in the capital of the Kurdistan region, raising rare hopes that renewed political dialogue might lead toward a resolution of long-standing disputes over oil rights and territorial boundaries.

Nouri al-Maliki was met at the Erbil International Airport by Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Massoud Barzani, the first time the two have met in nearly three years, creating the space to repair a relationship whose deterioration has mirrored that of the central and regional governments.
