IS oil smugglers continue stealing from Alas field

Despite losing territory and facing crippling air strikes, militants still control some wellheads in Salahaddin province and are sneaking crude to Mosul, and on to Syria.

SALAHADDIN PROVINCE - The self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) organization is taking advantage of security gaps in Salahaddin province to plunder the Alas oil field, despite a concerted campaign to dismantle the group's improvised oil sector.

"There is oil extraction and oil transportation from wells under Daesh control," said a senior security official in the village of Tal Kussaybah, immediately south of the Alas field.
