BASRA - When international oil companies started signing contracts with Iraq in 2009, the Iraq Drilling Company (IDC) saw an opportunity.

Foreign operators were generally looking to outsource their drilling work, and the IDC brought in additional equipment and staff, competing directly with the world's largest service companies.
