Q&A: Hossam Hussein Wali, director general of the South Refineries Company

Iraq's largest refinery, and the industry in south Iraq generally, is making steady progress for necessary growth.

BASRA - When the Baiji refinery became a target in the war against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) group in June 2014, the Shuaiba refinery in Basra became the country's largest.

Capacity expansion and product quality enhancement plans were moved forward, and by the end of 2018 it will increase capacity from 210,000 barrels per day (bpd) to nearly 300,000 bpd.
