Iraq postpones elections, haunted by 2018 debacle

Early elections have been pushed from June to October as the UN presses Iraq to avoid the disastrous mismanagement that undermined the last national vote.

Iraq has postponed its upcoming national elections by four months, as authorities struggle to overcome the kinds of technical and security problems that undermined public confidence in the 2018 elections.

Shortly after taking office last year, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi called for early elections to be held June 6, 2021. But on Monday, the Iraqi Cabinet voted in favor of rescheduling for Oct. 10, 2021, citing a recommendation by the Independent High Electoral Commission to delay for technical reasons.
