The U.S. has granted Iraq a 90-day waiver for its energy trade with Iran, which takes it months into the incoming Biden administration that is likely to take a less hardline stance on punishing sanctions against Iran.

"The Secretary has renewed the sanctions waiver for Iraq to engage in financial transfers related to the import of electricity from Iran," the State Department said in a written statement to Iraq Oil Report. "The waiver ensures that Iraq is able to meet its short-term energy needs while it takes steps to reduce its dependence on Iranian energy imports."
