Nujaifi begins IOC talks in Ninewa

Bolstered by a plurality of Kurdish members, the Ninewa Provincial Council has authorized Gov. Atheel Nujaifi to negotiate directly with oil companies, including ExxonMobil, Hunt and Genel.

The Ninewa Provincial Council has voted to authorize Governor Atheel Nujaifi to negotiate directly with oil companies looking to develop hydrocarbon resources in the province.

The vote is a victory for proponents of a decentralized Iraqi oil sector – especially the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), which has been locked in a nearly decade-long dispute with leaders in Baghdad over the shape of federalism in Iraq and the balance of oil powers between the central government and regional authorities.
