Basra security reinforced amidst unrest near oil sites

New security leadership and armored reinforcements come to Iraq's oil capital, as protests over jobs and conflicts among tribes cause instability near major oil sites.

BASRA - The Iraqi government is responding to the ongoing threat of lawlessness around oil sites in Basra by bolstering security forces and giving them new leadership.

Gen. Jameel al-Shimmari assumed leadership of the Basra Operations Command (BOC), which coordinates the security forces in the province, after a May 10 order issued by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, in a response to stubborn challenges to law and order.
