Drones strike Kurdistan oil fields

Attack on HKN-operated Sarsang field coincides with the company's signing of a preliminary upstream deal with the federal Oil Ministry.

SULAIMANIYA/CHAMCHAMAL - Armed drones hit two oil fields in Iraqi Kurdistan on Monday and Tuesday — the latest sign that militia groups operating beyond government control are determined to use violence to shape oil policy negotiations between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

One of the attacks, at about 7 a.m. on Tuesday, targeted the Sarsang field, operated by the American firm HKN. At the same time, senior executives from HKN were in Baghdad to sign what the Oil Ministry called a “preliminary agreement” to develop the Hamrin field, in Salahaddin province, which is the company's first deal with the federal government.
