Flash floods raise land mine danger

AMARA - Flash floods and torrential downpours have stranded villagers, collapsed embankments, and raised alarm that landmines could be washing into oil fields.

Samir Abboud of the Ministry of Environment's office in Missan province issued a warning Monday to citizens and the state-run Missan Oil Company that flash floods have displaced many of the roughly 5 million landmines along the Iran-Iraq border, which could consequently migrate as far as 10 kilometers.
