BASRA - Demonstrators blocked roads near the Majnoon oil field over the past week, claiming that Royal Dutch Shell has reneged on promises to provide jobs.

"We went out today after a number of repeated demands we made to both former and current local governments with regard engaging workers from the local areas with companies investing in the oil field," said local resident and protest organizer Adel Abdul Hussein. "Still, no action was taken so far."
