Smuggling busts implicate Basra crime rings

Four oil smuggling operations have been uncovered, but the suspected perpetrators are so powerful that security forces cannot safely make public accusations.

Oil smugglers in southern Iraq are continuing to steal crude and other oil products from southern pipelines, despite a ramp-up in security measures and calls from local leaders to curb the crime.

The latest smuggling operation to be uncovered, in late October, targeted an oil pipeline from the Rumaila oil field.
