BP signs Kirkuk deal for consulting, not drilling

The British super-major will give technical advice, but political disputes still prevent any development deal that would put work boots and rigs on the ground.

KIRKUK - The much-hyped agreement between BP and Iraq's Oil Ministry will see the oil major offer advice and technical evaluation for the Kirkuk oil field, without deploying any major assets.

"This thing is about just looking at what they can do for the fields," said Najmaldin Karim, the governor of Kirkuk. "It is not for any drilling or exploration."
