ERBIL - The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has taken a slight but significant step toward staking out its economic independence by approving the direct export of crude oil from the region to international buyers in Turkey.
Spurred by the arrival of winter, which has increased demand on the region's refineries and power stations, and ongoing discontent by companies operating in the semi-autonomous northern Iraqi region, the KRG struck agreements to sell crude from the Taq Taq field to the international market.
