An up-and-coming Iraqi soccer player was killed on his way to practice when a car bomb exploded in eastern Baghdad on Monday, according to various reports and the English-language Twitter account for news from Iraq’s Football Association.

Mahdi Abdul Zahra, 19, played on Iraq’s under-23 team and on the Iraqi Premier League team Kahraba’ FC. Kahraba Coach Shakir Mahmoud confirmed the news of Abdul Zahra’s passing to Iraqi news agency AIN on Monday night. He added that another Kahraba player Haider Kudhayer was injured in the blast that, according to Turkish Weekly, killed at least 15 people and injured 40 more. Mahmoud said Kudhayer was taken to a nearby hospital.
