Several U.S. Embassy personnel traveling through Baghdad on Thursday were detained by Iraqi security forces for two hours while their identities were checked, an embassy spokesman said.
The spokesman, Michael McClellan, said the embassy workers were served tea while the checks were made. “The identities were verified, and they were released,” he said.
McClellan said he believed there were four embassy personnel members inside the vehicle. Asked whether they were armed, he said that embassy personnel always travel with security. He would not comment on what the workers were doing, but called it “routine movement.”
