BAGHDAD - Iraq's capital and major cities suffered a bloody day of bombings and assassinations Monday, as sectarian conflict and political dysfunction continued to feed a vicious cycle of violence.
At least 65 people were killed and 227 injured by the attacks, which targeted predominately Shiite areas around Iraq. The bombings followed a violent weekend in Anbar province, where Iraqi police were kidnapped and murdered and the government attempted to arrest a powerful sheik.
