UPDATE: Depot fire temporarily cuts Iraqi crude exports
An explosion at the Zubair-1 depot has taken up to 1.5 million bpd of Basra Medium crude exports offline, as Iraq scrambles to divert production to storage and implement workarounds to recover export volumes.
Fire fighters and civil defense corps members extinguish the fire at the Zubair-1 pumping station following a gas leak explosion on Oct. 26, 2025.
BASRA - A large portion of Iraq's oil exports were taken temporarily offline after a gas leak caused a deadly explosion and large fire at the Zubair-1 depot, which pumps Basra Medium crude to single point mooring (SPM) buoys in the Basra Gulf.
One senior operations worker at the pumping station was killed in the incident, and there were several other injuries, according to a medical official, a security official, and an official at the state-run Basra Oil Company (BOC). The Oil Ministry said in a statement Sunday that one person was killed and four injured; other officials said at least 20 people were taken to the hospital for injuries.
