Ali al-Zaidi has been confirmed as Iraq’s new prime minister after the Parliament approved a majority of his proposed Cabinet, including Bassim Mohammed Khudair as oil minister.
Parliament voted on Thursday for 14 ministers, with nine positions still pending, according to an official Parliament statement. Zaidi and the approved ministers took the constitutional oath of office in the same session, the statement said; in a break with precedent, the proceedings were not broadcast on state television, prompting some anchors to express confusion and surprise on air at the media restrictions.
