Desertification destroys Ninawa villages

Whole villages in Ninawa province are being abandoned as a result of drought and increasing desertification which is making life impossible for those who remain on the once arable land.

Al-Tal district, located 24 km south-west of Mosul, has witnessed a devastating transformation. Sixty out of 150 villages have been abandoned because of drought, the encroaching desert and insufferable sand storms.

Haj Abdullah, a farmer and livestock herder who has spent most of his life in Jaghayfa village, is one more villager who has now decided enough is enough in the face of sand dunes that reach up to the roof of his house.
