BAQUBA - In a bid to stimulate the province's economy, officials in Diyala have taken preparatory steps to reopen a border crossing with Iran that has been closed since the Iran-Iraq war started in 1980.

Diyala Press Director Turath al-Azzawi said a provincial committee agreed to take "immediate measures" to help reopen the Sumer border crossing, near Mandali, a town 90km east of the provincial capital of Baquba.
