Heat wave hits citizens, fuel and power supplies

Baghdad suffers the worst of fuel shortages, as heat wave overwhelms Iraq’s electrical grid and drives demand for generator fuel.

BAGHDAD - On Monday, the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court read cases and questioned attorneys by flashlight. As temperatures reached 120 degrees (49 Celsius), the top judicial body in the country had no national power and a broken generator.

Elsewhere in Baghdad, taxis, mini-buses and family automobiles queued in long-winding lines at state-run gas stations. At private stations, the lots were empty, their pumps shut because there was no benzene or diesel to sell.
