BASRA - Senior Basra security officials are downplaying warnings that militant groups could be planning to kidnap western oil workers.
The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad issued a warning on May 21 that "militant groups may be surveilling U.S. citizens for possible kidnapping operations, particularly oil company employees" in Basra, especially at hotels. The British government issued a similar warning to its citizens.
