Maliki at oil transparency launch: ‘corruption is treason’

International effort will keep light on Iraq's attempt to be first Middle East nation to receive EITI accreditation, which was officially launched Sunday.

BAGHDAD - In a country perpetually ranked high for corruption and low for delivering basic services, there shouldn't be much need to emphasize the importance of institutionalizing transparency in the Iraqi oil sector, which produces nearly all state revenue.

But for a global industry known for producing black gold in dark room deals, a little vitriol can be useful encouragement.
