Oil field attack signals dire war risks for Kurdistan energy sector

Drone strikes on Sarsang raise new doubts for IOCs about the viability of restarting wartime oil production as the KRG demands security guarantees from Baghdad.

ERBIL - Iran-backed paramilitary forces in Iraq attacked the Swara Tika oil field with two armed drones on Thursday, a clear sign that Kurdistan's energy assets have become targets in an escalating regional war.

A militant group known as Kataib Sarkhat al-Quds claimed responsibility in a March 5 statement for "targeting the interests of the American enemy and their agents in Erbil and Dohuk governorates of northern Iraq with two drones" as an act of revenge for the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
