BAGHDAD - Abdul Mahdy al-Ameedi, the longtime champion and steward of Iraq's contracts with foreign oil companies, is being replaced — one of more than a dozen changes the Oil Ministry has ordered, as a new, stringent retirement law takes effect.

Ali Maarij, the former head of the state-run Missan Oil Company (MOC), will take over for Ameedi as the head of the ministry's Petroleum Contracts and Licensing Directorate (PCLD). Other major changes include the reinstatement of Ihsan Ismaael as the director general of the state-run Basra Oil Company (BOC), three months after he was removed from the position; and the three-month extension of Deputy Minister Fayadh Nema's tenure.
