The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has dominated politics in the autonomous Kurdistan region for more than a decade, but Iraq's upcoming national elections will present it with new challenges.

Less than a month after the KDP led an independence referendum in September 2017, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi ordered a military operation to re-establish federal control of Kirkuk and other disputed territories.
