Iran shoots down suspected spy drone near Iraq border

Iran's military shot down a suspected reconnaissance drone in a province on its western border with Iraq, a military official said Saturday. "A while ago, an unknown drone entered the area and was identified by our monitoring systems," Farzad Fereydouni, air defence commander for Kermanshah province, told the official IRNA news agency.

What Gertrude Bell’s Letters Remind Us About the Founding of Iraq

I first encountered the work of the British traveller, archeologist, and spy Gertrude Bell many years ago, while hunting in the archives for a Carmelite priest named Père Anastase-Marie de Saint-Élie, an obscure figure in the history of Arabic lexicography. “He’s a jolly monk, an Arab from the Lebanon straight out of Chaucer all the […]

Putin’s new axis of resistance: Russia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Hezbollah

One year ago, on September 5, 2014, a group of Russian agents, armed with smoke grenades, radio jammers, and guns, crossed eight kilometers into NATO territory, subdued a NATO counterintelligence agent and kidnapped him across the border. Eston Kohver (married, father of four) was then tried in Moscow as a spy and, despite inadequate legal representation, he was given […]

Pet pigeons take flight in Iraq’s Mosul as militants retreat

For the first time in over two years, flocks of white and grey pigeons can be seen circling Mosul’s rooftops. Among the many rules imposed by the Islamic State group when it seized the northern Iraqi city was a ban on breeding or flying the birds, which many Iraqis keep as pets or raise for […]

Iraqi forces consolidate gains in half-liberated Mosul

With IS militants purged from the eastern half of the city, security forces prepare for the next phase of battle while residents strive to recover from two months of urban warfare.

Beaten and bruised, detainee recounts Islamic State torture

Abdel Razzaq Jalal paused, visibly traumatised, as he told how Islamic State militants tortured him in a Mosul prison to force him to say he was a spy. "I never confessed. I knew the punishment would be death," he said. The ultra-hardline group arrested the 39-year-old in his village near Mosul in northern Iraq earlier […]

US intelligence officials have ‘underestimated’ Isil’s plan to attack the West

The US intelligence community is failing in its duty to protect America against the threat of future attacks by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a former senior intelligence official has warned. In echoes of the criticisms after the 9/11 attacks, Derek Harvey, who worked as a top intelligence agent and advisor on […]

How ISIS picks its suicide bombers

They come from Russia, France—even New Jersey—to end their lives for an “Islamic State.” But an ISIS defector reveals that Saddam’s old spies are the ones holding all the triggers. For all the attention paid to ISIS, relatively little is known about its inner workings. But a man claiming to be a member of the […]

In a Daesh prison, he had no hope. But then he heard the drones.

Before Kurdish and US commandos arrived at his cell door last month, Hassan Abu Ahmad had not seen daylight for five months. Held in a Daesh prison near the northern Iraqi town of Hawijah, the 46-year-old was accused of being a spy and regularly tortured. Sometimes a plastic bag was placed over his face until he […]

Why is Iraq ignoring US concerns about Russia?

Russia is using the Syrian conflict to demonstrate its importance on the world stage, and to erode U.S. attempts at isolating Russia after its land grab last year in Crimea. Russia, which has repeatedly expressed its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, admits to transferring T-90 tanks, howitzers, and armored personnel carriers. "There were military supplies, they are […]

Deepening Russian involvement in Iraq complicates U.S. airstrikes on Islamic State

Russian reconnaissance flights over Iraq to spy on Islamic State militants would complicate the U.S.-led campaign against the extremist group but wouldn’t obstruct it, American officials said Monday after Baghdad left open the possibility of overflights by Moscow.  At the same time, U.S. ability to share intelligence with Iraq could be diminished if the Iraqis […]

Killing Abu Ghadiya

The four helicopters scythed through the air, two Black Hawks full ofDelta Force operators covered by a pair of AH-6 Little Birds, all headed for the Syrian border near Al Qaim. The aircraft were flown by some of the Army’s most skilled pilots, the Night Stalkers, but it was broad daylight — 4:45 p.m. on October […]
