Legislators fight over Shahristani questioning

Members of Parliament who back Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani take to the media in response to opponents who have alleged corruption and evasion.

A day before Iraq’s oil minister is due in Parliament to challenge legislators who have accused him of corruption and illegal contracting, supporters rallied in press conferences Monday on the sidelines of Parliament sessions.

"We say that these questionings are political, not professional," said Haider al-Horani, a member of Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani’s independent block of Parliamentarians. "It is better for those people who want the questioning to host him at the Parliament to listen to him and then question the minister."
